Support Haiti Relief and get $10 off your next pair of shoes

The devastation in Haiti keeps haunting me. I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be surrounded by so much sorrow, death, and destruction. It scares me to think of how common place tragedy is in so many parts of the world and yet in America we are beyond blessed. Often times I am struck by how that blessing might actually be ignorance. When I go to bed I don't consider the safety of my children - it is a given. When I go outside, I'm not afraid to walk to my car or take out the trash. But so many are not blessed with reassurance. So many have to live their lives in fear of disaster, be it by nature or violence.

I often feel helpless when I hear about other country's tragedy. But helplessness doesn't have to mean we can't try. Trying to offer support, no matter how small is better than nothing. One small way that we can help is by donating shoes. Many of you are aware that Sole Obsession is partnered with an organization called Soles4Souls. They are dedicating all shoes donated between now and the end of February to Haiti. Will you help in their efforts to support Haiti?

Bring in any shoes that you can part with to Sole Obsession Footwear and we will give you $10 off your next pair of shoes.

We are collecting any and all kinds: Men's, Women's and Kids.

Thank you for your help.

Praying for the Spoelstra and Heutink families

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was close to Nick Spoelstra and his family. My wonderful friend Tami knows the Spoelstra family and has joined so many in mourning this loss. Tami so eloquently wrote, "God has the answers and we are looking to Him for comfort. Ours is not to wonder why..." I pray that God will provide that peace to Nick's family and friends during this time.

A new button

I have a new button on my side bar. The 3/50 project.

I have always been a shop local kinda girl. I love visiting quaint, unique shops and helping to support those who own them. Of course, now that I am a small business owner AND I am part of a town full of small business owners, I feel even more passionate about this cause. What used to be something I enjoyed simply because has turned into something I enjoy because of it's outcome.
Of course, I always knew that I was supporting the business owner by shopping at their store. What I didn't fully grasp is the support shopping local has on the community.
You know that lovely thing we all hate called sales tax? Well, it paves our streets, improves our parks, and helps our town thrive. Not only that, shopping local provides jobs for countless local citizens who would maybe otherwise not have a job to go to. Last but not least, supporting local business keeps our town "alive" and encourages other business to set up shop here too. Its the basic cycle of life. What comes around goes around.
The 3/50 plan is simple...pick 3 businesses that you would miss if they disappeared and spend $50 each month buying something at these local businesses. Be a part of the cycle that keeps Lynden turning.

You can read tons more about this on the 3/50 project website.

I'll leave with one more stat from the website. "For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home.
