Last night was the Downtown Holiday open house. Great sales all around town. Thanks to all the Lynden store owners that participated. Even greater thanks to the Lynden folks that came out to support their local merchants. We wouldn't be here without you and you are what keeps us coming to work everyday.

Vancouver, BC Field Trip

This Saturday I was able to take a day off and head into the Great White North (aka Vancouver, BC).  I spent most of my time visiting shoe stores on Robson Street and at Pacific Center mall.  I was scoping out what was in style, how stores were laid out, what shelving they were using to display merchandise…you know, just a typical shopping day.  I was pleased to find that most of my shoes were on the shelves in the city.  I saw plenty of Clarks, Indigo, Hush Puppies, and Dansko.  I did come across some crazy styles that made me laugh hysterically.  If any of you are looking for that perfect holiday heel I may be able to help.  Take a look at this beauty…

You won’t be finding this at Sole Obsession but I can certainly help you find it elsewhere.

I also find it strangely amusing to ask sales people if they carry women’s size 12’s.  At another time in my life I would almost literally run from the store if spoken to.  Now I find it humorous to hear the varied responses.  This weekend my favorite two were:  “Why you don’t wear that size do you?”  and “I think if you go to the states you can find shoes that big.”  My response to the last comment was nothing short of facetious.  “That’s a good idea, I’ll check that out.”  Sadly out of my 6 store visits I didn’t find one that carried a size 12 and only 2 carried up to size 11 regularly.  None of them would consider special ordering.  All I can say is thank goodness I own a shoe store or I may still be wearing my men’s hiking boots from Eddie Bauer that I bought in 1996.  It was not a good look and we don’t want to bring it back.  Trust me! 

So that was my Saturday.  Suffice it to say Sole Obsession and I are sticking together.  After an adventure in the city I am loving my small town store even more.  And I love that there are size 12’s in stock!  :)

Happy Birthday Sole Obsession

Today is the day we mark our one year anniversary. Woot Woot! I was reminiscing yesterday about that mysterious day only a year ago when I walked into the store, turned on the 'open' sign, and waited...



So many things running through my mind. What if no one comes? What if everyone comes? What if I can't figure out how to ring up a sale in the computer? What in the world was I thinking? It was definitely a moment for the memory books. Me, a store full of shoes, and a mind swirling with "what if's".
That first day was awesome. My first two customers were a pair of lovely ladies who came on their lunch break. Karen and Colleen were so sweet. They 'oohed' and 'ahhhed' and made me feel like everything was going to be just fine. Thanks Ladies!
So now one year later I am sitting in that same spot. About to turn on the open sign and wait. Today I'm not nervous. I still sometimes wonder the "what if's" but now I know some of the answers. I'm pretty sure I can use the computer to ring up a sale. If no one comes in or if the whole world decided to shop at Sole Obsession today we'd survive. And although I do still question what in the world I was thinking starting a business, I am so glad I did. I love this job! So Happy Birthday Sole Obsession. Cheers to 20 more years.
